Greenhouse effect gases (GHG) emissions produced during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) will be totally neutralized, assured Hernando Guerrero Cázares, Advisors Coordinator of Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).
“We have worked in all aspects of the sustainability of this event”, he said. “Every participating country will receive a formal certificate which states that all emissions generated during their stay were neutralized.”
Mexican authorities will make an inventory of emissions generated by each delegation during their stay, but trips to arrive in and depart from Cancun will also be included. In all, it is expected that this event’s carbon footprint will be of 20,000 to 25,000 tons of equivalent carbon dioxide.
Each ton of equivalent carbon dioxide will cost 10 dollars in the Mexican voluntary carbon market. The resulting amount of money will be given to peasants dedicated to conservation and reforestation in the states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, in southern Mexico.
The Advisors Coordinator of SEMARNAT added that, in cooperation with 61 hotels in Cancun, they prevented the emission of 9,900 additional tons of equivalent carbon dioxide. He also highlighted that emissions derived from transportation were 80% lower due to the use of biodiesel
