China Green Carbon Foundation and other International institutions held a training program in Lima during COP20

December 8, 2014, the first day of the second week of 2014 UN Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru, China Green Carbon Foundation (CGCF), International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR), Earth Innovation Institute (EII), World Bank and Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental Da Amazzonia jointly held a training event on ‘Managing Forest Landscapes for Multiple Returns-Tools for Carbon Monitoring and Simplified Financial Analysis’, in NMS Hotels of Lima. About 60 representatives from member countries of INBAR, Lima local forestry enterprises and other NGOs attended the program.

The main training contents include forestry combating climate change, methodology on forest carbon sequestration project especially the methodology for carbon accounting and monitoring of bamboo afforestation projects in China, carbon trade and tools for forestry enterprise carbon monitoring and simplified financial analysis.

Dr.Li Nuyun, Secretary-General of CGCF, Deputy Director of Climate Change Office, State Forestry Administration of China, gave a speech titled Exploration and Practice of China’s Forest Carbon Management including practices of forest carbon management, forest carbon trade increasing farmers’ income to consolidate the results of collective forest property system reform in China. Dr.Zhou Guomo, Professor and President of Zhejiang A&F University, introduced methodology for carbon accounting and monitoring of bamboo afforestation projects in China, bamboo plantation and research on bamboo carbon sequestration to the audience. Ms. Naomi Swickard, Manager, Sustainable Landscapes, Verified Carbon Standard Association (VCS) presented the experience of developing VCS REDD  projects and programs in Africa. Briana Swette of EII, Dr. Ane Alencar of Amazon Environmental Institute, elaborated monitoring methods of forest landscapes. Dr. Shoana Humphries from EII talked about Green Value:methodology for fimplified financial analysis in the Amazon basin. Representatives of INBAR provided the financial analysis tools of poverty elimination funds in rural areas of Peru and Ecuador. Expert of World Bank introduced the experiences with the use of financial analysis tools with forest initiatives community based in Mexico.

Facilitated by the Construction Committee of Peru Amazon Basin, participants discussed issues of common concern in Latin America including financing and funding effectiveness for community forestry enterprise development.

The audiences are very interested in issues on China’s forestry policy and action to combat climate change, Chinese bamboo industry development and methodology for carbon accounting and monitoring of bamboo afforestation projects in China. They had a lot of questions and got satisfied answers from Chinese experts during the event. Participants were satisfied with this great opportunity to get to know China’s forestry practices to address climate change and they hoped get more such training program in the future.
